A stronger local IT presence in Kalgoorlie, backed by our wider team in Perth and the Philippines
At Qbit IT Solutions, we are proud to share some exciting news. Effective 17 October 2026, we have acquired Acme Computers, the well-known Kalgoorlie IT business that has looked after local organisations for 26 years. Acme will continue to operate as Acme Computers, Powered by Qbit IT Solutions, so the name and the faces our new clients know and trust are not going anywhere.
If you are one of the Acme Computers customers reading this, welcome. If you are an existing Qbit client with a branch office in Kalgoorlie, you will already know we are no strangers to the region. Either way, this is good news for anyone who needs dependable IT support in the Goldfields.
A new chapter for Shane and Michele
A few months ago, Shane and Michele, the owners of Acme Computers, approached us to ask whether we would be interested in acquiring their business. After 26 years of looking after Kalgoorlie businesses, they had decided it was time to start a new chapter in their lives.
We were honoured to be the IT company they chose to approach. Building a business over that many years takes real commitment, and handing it over is not a decision made lightly. Shane and Michele have been clear that they wanted their customers to land somewhere that shares their commitment to reliable service and personal support. We have worked hard to earn that trust, and we will keep working at it every day.
Why Kalgoorlie made sense for Qbit
This acquisition was a natural progression for us. Qbit is a Western Australian owned and managed IT and cyber security provider supporting more than 300 businesses across the state. Before the acquisition, we already had a full time team member in Kalgoorlie, Michael Slater, and more than 15 of our existing customers had branch offices in the town.
In other words, we were already part of the Kalgoorlie business community. Acquiring Acme Computers lets us take a much stronger foothold in the local IT market and give our customers the on-the-ground support they expect. For businesses that rely on Perth IT support at head office and need the same standard of service at a Kalgoorlie site, that is a real advantage.
A smooth transition, with a few hiccups along the way
We have been working closely with Shane and Michele to transition customers across to Qbit gradually, rather than all at once. That approach has given us time to learn each client’s environment, understand how they like to work and make sure nothing is missed.
We will be honest: there have been a few minor hiccups, as you would expect with any acquisition. Overall, though, the transition has gone better than any other acquisition we have completed. That is a credit to Shane and Michele, to our team and, most of all, to the patience of the customers involved.
Welcome to our new clients
We would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome all of our new clients. Many of you have already met Jaydan, our account manager, who has been out to see a number of you in person. Face to face conversations matter to us, because they help us understand what your business actually needs from its technology.
The work has started quickly. Within the first month, we deployed a large phone system for one of our Kalgoorlie clients. It is a good example of what becomes possible when local knowledge is paired with a larger team of specialists.
Welcoming Joshua Barrett to the Qbit team
Another major part of this acquisition is welcoming Joshua Barrett to Qbit. Joshua has agreed to come across from Acme Computers, and we are very glad to have him on board. For many Kalgoorlie clients, Joshua is the familiar local face, and that continuity is something we value highly.
Joshua is now in Kalgoorlie alongside Michael, backed by Qbit staff in Perth and the Philippines. That combination has greatly improved our response times for existing customers in Kalgoorlie. It has also widened the range of solutions we can offer, both to existing Acme Computers clients and to Qbit clients with a presence in the region.
What this means for you: more services, closer to home
Acme Computers clients now have access to a full managed IT services that Perth businesses already rely on, while Qbit clients gain a stronger local presence in Kalgoorlie. We can now offer the following services to both groups.
Email migration to Microsoft 365
If your business is still running older email systems, moving to Microsoft 365 can give your team reliable email, shared calendars, Teams and the latest security features in one place. Our team plans each migration carefully, moves mailboxes with minimal disruption and makes sure your staff know how to use the new tools from day one. We have completed Exchange migrations and Microsoft 365 projects for businesses across a range of industries, and we bring that experience to every new client.
Data migration to SharePoint
Many Kalgoorlie businesses still rely on an on-site file server that is ageing, expensive to maintain and hard to access when staff are travelling. Moving that data to SharePoint makes files easier to find and share, and easier to protect. One of our priorities is what we call Minimal Viable Access, which means configuring permissions so each person can see only the documents, folders and resources they need for their role. It reduces risk and keeps sensitive information where it belongs. We have also migrated a group’s primary file server from an on-premises server in Kalgoorlie to a Qbit-hosted environment, so we know the local conditions well.
Microsoft Copilot implementation
AI tools are becoming part of everyday work, but getting value from them takes more than switching on a licence. Qbit can deploy Microsoft Copilot, provide licensing and deliver user training. Copilot works best when your SharePoint data is well organised and properly secured, which is exactly why our SharePoint and Copilot services sit so well together. We have run Copilot seminars, and we can help your team use it for drafting documents, analysing data and streamlining everyday workflows without exposing information it should not see.
Phone system implementations
A reliable phone system is the front door to your business. Our team has experience with 3CX and VoIP systems, and as mentioned above, we have already deployed a large phone system for a Kalgoorlie client within the first month of the acquisition. Whether you are replacing an ageing handset system, moving offices or connecting staff across multiple sites, we can design, install and support a solution that fits.
Starlink network deployments
Connectivity in remote Western Australia is rarely simple. Starlink has changed what is possible, and we have put it to work in demanding conditions. We can also bond multiple Starlink services together to provide failover or combined bandwidth, which is a practical solution while a permanent carrier service is still being connected.
Mine camp setup, from internet to security
Setting up a camp is about much more than internet access. It needs wireless coverage across rooms and common areas, segmented networks for staff, guests and connected devices, CCTV, television distribution and strong cyber security. We handle the whole thing, including the internet connection, CCTV, MATV and every IT and security component, with one team managing the project from design to handover.
Our experience here is substantial. For a remote workforce accommodation village of 75 four-bedroom units, around 300 rooms, we helped design and coordinate the network, communications, wireless access, physical security, television distribution and monitoring. For another remote accommodation project, we delivered a complete greenfield deployment covering site-wide wireless design, enterprise Wi-Fi, point-to-multipoint wireless distribution, NBN fibre integration, guest Wi-Fi, CCTV and smart lock integration. Anyone looking for IT support for mining operations in the Goldfields now has a local team that has done this kind of work before.
Cyber security for Kalgoorlie businesses
Growing connectivity brings growing risk, and local businesses are not immune. Our cyber security services Perth clients rely on are now available in Kalgoorlie too. We can help with Microsoft 365 security, multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, email security, staff awareness training and recovery planning. We can also help you understand your SMB1001 requirements and plan improvements towards your chosen certification level. For small business cyber security and larger operations alike, the goal is the same: practical protection that suits the way your people actually work.
Looking ahead
We are excited about what this means for Kalgoorlie. Local support from familiar people, backed by a larger team of IT professionals, specialist expertise and stronger cyber security capability, is a combination we believe the town deserves. As a Perth IT company with deep roots across the state, we are committed to being a long term partner in the Goldfields, not just a visitor.
Thank you to Shane and Michele for trusting us with the business they built, to Joshua and Michael for leading our local team, and to every client who has welcomed us so warmly.
